About File Metadata

What is File Metadata?

File metadata, often called EXIF data for images, is a set of data that describes and gives information about other data. When you create a file—whether it's a photo, a PDF, or a Word document—information is automatically embedded within that file.

What Information Can Metadata Contain?

  • For Images: Camera model, shutter speed, aperture, ISO speed, date and time the photo was taken, and even GPS coordinates of where it was taken.
  • For Documents: Author's name, company or organization, date of creation and modification, and the software used to create the file.

Why is it Important?

While metadata can be useful for organizing and searching your files, it can also contain sensitive information that you might not want to share. For example, sharing a photo online could inadvertently reveal the exact location where it was taken.

How Our Tool Helps

This tool allows you to view the metadata associated with your files. If you're concerned about privacy, you can also use the 'Remove Metadata and Download' button to get a clean version of your file with this hidden information stripped out.
