How Our Image Reducer Works
Our image reducer provides a powerful suite of tools to decrease the file size of your images, making them faster to load on websites and easier to share. We use three primary methods for size reduction, which can be used individually or combined for maximum effect.
1. Quality Reduction (Lossy Compression)
This method reduces file size by selectively discarding some of the image data in a way that is minimally perceptible to the human eye. It is a "lossy" method, meaning some quality is permanently lost. Lower quality settings result in smaller files but more visible artifacts. This technique is most effective for JPEG and WebP images.
2. Dimension Reduction (Resizing)
This is the most straightforward method. It reduces the number of pixels in the image by scaling it down. A smaller image (e.g., 500x500 pixels instead of 1000x1000) contains significantly less data and therefore has a much smaller file size. This method works on all image formats, including PNG, JPEG, and WebP.
3. Bit Depth Reduction (Color Palette Reduction)
This technique reduces file size by decreasing the number of colors the image can use. For example, an 8-bit image can have 256 colors, while a 4-bit image can only have 16. By reducing the color palette, the data required to store each pixels color information becomes much smaller. This method is specific to PNG images and is highly effective for simple graphics, logos, or illustrations.
